Recently several Endeavor employees, along with friends and family, participated in a whitewater rafting trip to the Ocoee River. Running through southeastern Tennessee and northern Georgia, the Ocoee River was the site for the whitewater slalom events during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and is widely considered one of the best rafting locales in the South. Intended to enhance team building and fellowship between departments, the trip was a huge success.
Braving a multitude of class 3 and 4 rapids with colorful names such as “Broken Nose” and “Hell’s Hole,” each boat first received in-depth training regarding paddling technique, rowing commands, and safety procedures (i.e. what to do if you fall out of the raft). Then, it was on to the river, a 4-hour trip that proved to be physically demanding but equally rewarding.

As areas of heavy rapids approached, the raft guides issued commands to each side of the boat that required precise coordination between each rower. Each stroke had to be in synch in order to guarantee a successful run through each rapid. In this way, operating a raft closely parallels how the Endeavor team works together; different departments with different functions all utilizing their skills and resources for a common goal, which for Endeavor is serving its customers effectively and affordably as the Telecom Truck Roll Company.
Highlights of the trip included one staff member’s husband falling out of the raft not once but twice and a stop-off at a large rock where adventurous rafters were allowed to take a 10-foot plunge off the rock and into the river (had the safety line not been in place, Endeavor would have lost half its operations staff down the river).
All in all it was an exciting trip for the Endeavor team. Not only was it a good opportunity to enjoy nature and get a good workout, it also was a reminder of the importance of teamwork. Successful organizations thrive on supportive and cooperative atmosphere and events such as the rafting excursion have been invaluable to the Endeavor team in further strengthening these bonds. Though the trials and tribulations faced daily in any company can be as unforgiving and unpredictable as the Ocoee River, the Endeavor team thrives on coordinated, unified efforts to traverse the rough patches, always extending an open hand if a teammate falls in the troubled water.

Stay tuned for next month’s edition of Endeavoring for more details on this exciting contest!
