WHEN OUTSOURCING YOUR FIELD FORCE MAKES SENSE

Business Solutions Magazine
January 2008

For VARs and service providers interested in adding new services or expanding into new territories, staffing up and training their field organizations is a key priority. But those tasks can take time and drain considerable resources. When opportunities arise, time-to-market is key. Outsourcing field services may provide an ideal solution to address such opportunities. The following Q&A with Justin McLain, CEO of Endeavor Telecom, discusses some of the conditions that might be best served by outsourcing field services in the telecommunications industry.

Q. Which field service tasks can most easily be outsourced?

A.We think the best types of outsourced installation and maintenance tasks are those that are easily repeatable ones that can be executed hundreds or thousands of times. These types of tasks provide clear expectations and predictable deliverables, which are associated with scaling a project to many, if not all, of an end user’s locations. Classic examples include extending demarcation points (i.e. the location where a telecommunications provider’s network ends and a private network begins) on new circuits, connecting premise equipment to inside wiring, installing POS (point of sale) and kiosk-based equipment, and installing VPNs and other managed services. Other examples include services like installing T1 and xDSL lines (for dedicated Internet access), voice and data circuits, VPNs (virtual private networks), SIP (session initiation protocol) trunking, and hosted PBX (private branch exchange) offerings. These types of tasks can be easily defined in a statement of work and charged at a flat installation rate, regardless of the geographic location.

ENDEAVOR'S KICKOFF OF 2008

Endeavor’s goals and focus for 2008 were made clear on the evening of Saturday, January 12th, when Endeavor held its annual kickoff party to celebrate a highly successful 2007 and look forward to a stellar 2008 with food, drinks, dancing, and camaraderie.

During the internal state-of-the-Endeavor-union address, CEO Justin McLain spoke candidly with the Endeavor team, reflecting on the successes of ’07 while outlining three key goals for ’08. The first of these initiatives is the diversification of Endeavor’s client base. In order to accomplish this, the sales and account management teams will look to bring on new accounts whose specialties lie outside the telecom industry. Expanding into new industries such as security/ alarm systems, point-of-sales deployment, and digital display/signage technologies will not only increase revenue but will also perpetuate the company’s reputation as the leading provider of outsourced professional services.

The next goal described for 2008 involves enhancing the efficiency, scalability, and automation of company operations. During its ascension to the top of the industry as “The Telecom Truck Roll Company of Choice” Endeavor has utilized efficient operations to streamline processes internally and for our customers. As the company continues the exponential growth it experienced in 2007, automation and scalability become paramount to guarantee continued successes. Through various initiatives – such as the further automation of processes via the Endeavor Service Portal (ESP) and a focus of operations management on staff development – the company’s operations will continue to evolve through 2008.

The final goal issued was to strengthen Endeavor’s management infrastructure by providing more opportunities for internal advancement as well as the intent to hire seasoned industry veterans from outside of the company. As the growth trend of 2007 continues into the new year, an expanded management team will be required to execute the CEO’s initiatives, so top performing staff members may be looked upon to fill the needs of new opportunities that may arise for this reason.  As Endeavor continues to develop its highly capable team of associates, it looks forward to the influence and mentorship of the outside talent that will augment its senior ranks.

This discussion of advancement opportunities smoothly led to the recognition of those staff members who had been recently promoted or moved to new positions. Endeavor’s recent growth was evidenced by the fact that the announcing just the past four or so months of recent promotions and new hires took nearly twenty minutes followed by an enduring applause. In the grand finale, awards were presented for a select few top performers whose contribution to the company went above and beyond the call of duty. Each winner received a shiny trophy for their desks as well as a substantial cash award with the taxes paid in full by the company. Then, it was finally time for drinks, delicacies, and dancing.

Overall the party was a smashing success, not only due to the funky dance moves or mounds of gourmet treats. Despite the fun times and savory refreshments, there was a tangible feeling of nostalgic pride for the year that was and focused excitement for the year to come. The aspirations for 2008 set forth by the Executive team were not perceived by the staff as a monotone preamble to the open bar but rather a challenge to each member of the Endeavor team to step it up and take ownership in making a successful 2008 – a challenge taken very seriously by each attentive listener.
